Kimmel Selected to Play in Ernie Davis Senior Classic

Harpursville Senior Andrew Kimmel was selected to play for the East in the 24th Ernie Davis Senior Classic, Thanksgiving Eve at Union Endicott’s Ty Cobb Stadium. The annual all star game is designed to showcase the top senior football players in Section IV. The game is named in honor of the late Ernie Davis, a graduate of Elmira Free Academy who later starred at Syracuse University and became the first African-American athlete to win the Heisman Trophy.

Andrew has been a three year starter for the Hornets at linebacker, fullback, and long snapper. As one of the Team Captains, his leadership was a driving force behind Harpursville’s 7-2 record this past fall. Two Section IV Girl’s Hoops Stars Pick St. Bonaventure

November 13, 2013

Harpursville, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Two of the best high school girls basketball players in Section IV will be attending and playing for the same school next season.

Harpursville’s Miranda Drummond signed her letter of intent to play for St. Bonaventure next season. Drummond helped lead the Hornets to the Class C state finals last year.

Miranda said Wednesday was all about celebrating all the work it took to get to this point.

“I mean I’ve been working ever since I was little with my Dad,” said Drummond. “I don’t know, it feels amazing that all of my hard work has paid off and I’m going to go play basketball in college for free.”

Drummond will be joined by Oneonta’s Mariah Ruff at St. Bonaventure next season. Ruff also signed her letter of intent to play for the Bonnies on Wednesday.

Harpursville Has A National Champion

McKenzie Townsend Scores in Championship Game

UConn Claims Third National Championship

Nov. 24, 2013

Norfolk, Va. – The University of Connecticut field hockey team defeated Duke by a score of 2-0 to earn the program’s third National Championship at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia on Sunday afternoon. The Huskies cap a sensational season on the highest possible note with a record of 21-4, while Duke finishes its season at 17-7.

Duke earned the game’s early corner attempts but Sarah Mansfiled (Cornwall, England) denied three shots off the corners and the Husky defense played relentlessly to keep the game scoreless.

UConn used two first half goals to open up a 2-0 lead over the Blue Devils, with both goals resulting from penalty corners. The Huskies capitalized on their second corner of the afternoon to record their first tally. Roisin Upton (Limerick, Ireland) launched a shot that Duke keeper, Lauren Blazing, turned aside, but the rebound squirted to an open Hunnable in front of the cage. The junior popped in her 23rd goal of the season to break onto the scoreboard at 23:05.

Connecticut struck again with 5:36 remaining in the first half.  Anne Jeute (Meerbusch, Germany) resulted in another UConn corner as time wound down before the intermission. Hunnable received the ball on the corner and ripped a hard low shot to the lower right corner of the goal. McKenzie Townsend (Harpursville, N.Y.) positioned herself perfectly in front of the goal with her stick on the turf to redirect the shot up and over Blazing for a 2-0 UConn lead.

Connecticut nearly increased its lead in the second half, as Chloe Hunnable continued her hot play on the offensive end. Hunnable nearly tipped a Chrissy Davidson (West Lawn, Pa.) free hit into the back of the cage but her redirect went just wide. Moments later, Hunnable let rip a shot that clanged off the crossbar and out of play.

Duke called a timeout with 8:54 to play in the hopes of solving Sarah Mansfield, but could not find the key to the senior goaltender. Mansfield finished with five stops for Connecticut while her counterpart, Lauren Blazing, recorded three saves in the net for Duke.

Maria Elena Bolles, Chloe Hunnable, Roisin Upton, Chrissy Davidson, and Sarah Mansfield were all named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team for their exceptional performances in UConn’s NCAA run.

Varsity 2013 Season Recap

This past field hockey season was like no other. The varsity team struggled to make ends meet but were able to keep a positive attitude along the way. Throughout the season the girls were able to learn new techniques and game-like strategies that they will be able to use in their future seasons.

During the season the field hockey program set up a “****** Cancer Awareness” concession stand where they were able to raise over $100. They donated the money to the Susan G. Koman Foundation where the money will be used towards finding a cure.

This year there were two varsity girls that were awarded “2nd Team All-star”, Miranda Congdon and Shannon Nixon.  There were also two varsity girls that were awarded “1st Team All-Star”, Abby Bird and Carissa Warren. These girls were awarded their awards by the head of Section IV during half time of the “Senior Classic Game” that was on November 4th at Vestal High School. Courtney Lee, Kayla Schultz and Abby Bird were the three seniors that were selected to play on the home team for the “Senior Class Game” and helped their team win with a final score of 2-0.

I would like to say thank you for all of the help and support thatall the parents have given this past season and would like to wish the best of luck to the seniors with whatever it is they choose to do.
