Former Hornet Speaks Out

High school is one h*** of a roller coaster. High school is hard, annoying, awkward, irritating, memorable, fun, exciting, and educational.

In high school, you experience the good and the bad. You find out who your true friends are, learn life lessons, and which teachers actually care about you as an individual inside and outside the classroom.

In high school, we complained about the teachers that gave us too much work, were too hard on us, and expected too much from us. But did you take into any consideration that those teachers are the ones that actually care about you?

Teachers are hard on you because they want to prepare you for the “real world” and for college. Teachers are hard on you because they know you can do better. Teachers are hard on you because they know you have all the potential in the world and it’s your job to show it.

Honestly, if my teachers weren’t the people that they are to this day, my high school experience would not have been the same. The tough teachers are the ones that you remember the most. You remember all the work that they made you complete, all the books they made you read, all the papers they made you write, and you know why you remember them so well? Because they didn’t let you off easy. It’s their job to show that life is tough so that makes the work load even heavier. But all of that work, time, and effort shouldn’t be seen as a nightmare. It should be seen has a blessing in disguise.

If you’re reading this and you’re in high school you’re probably thinking that I’m crazy. Or maybe you’re reading this and you didn’t experience this and you don’t believe me. But, this is coming from the girl who took several AP classes, absolutely hated the work load that she received, but did it anyways because she knew it would benefit her in the long run. You might have a 15 page essay due, maybe you have to write a critical analysis, maybe you have to present 4 presentations for your classes and maybe you have to take that heavily weighted test. News flash, all of that in time, and in the moment even though you don’t realize it, is actually helping you.

You learn to build a work ethic, one that is promising for your future. You learn to build up your motivation, that can be used to strive for excellence. You build up your intelligence which will help grow wisdom beyond your years. You grow to be passionate about what you love. You become patient in time. And most importantly, as you grow within your high school experience you shape yourself to the person in which you are meant to be.

So I’d like to say thank you to all of my high school teachers. Whether I had you in class, whether I saw you in the hallway everyday and you gave me a comforting smile, whether I spoke with you to catch up on life, or whether you were there for me as a mentor and friend. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to enjoy my high school experience and even more thank you for making it so it was a 4 years that I will never forget. 4 years in which I know I will never get back, but I wouldn’t have been able to enjoy those 4 years without your help.

It’s people like you that make students like me truly appreciate not only who you are as an educator and teacher but who you are as a person. You have forever left an imprint in my life, in my soul, and in my heart. Because of you I know how to make a works cited page, I know that when you say there’s no homework, there is. I know that when you say we should start reading our book early and not later, you’re not joking. I especially know that if I ever need help, I can come to you with full confidence.

So thank you. Thank you for being you. Thank you for helping me guide my way through those 4 years of high school. Thank you for allowing me to wake up and look forward to going to school, at least sometimes. Thank you for being there for me when I didn’t need you and when I needed you most. Thank you for providing me with a vast knowledge of several different subjects. Thank you for all that you do each and every single day and may you continue to do so for as long as you may live. Thank you for being a part of my life. Thank you for being that beacon of hope and shining light at the end of the tunnel.

Thank you.
Esperanza Gutierrez

Medovich

AURORA, N.Y. – The Wells College women’s basketball team posted a come-from-behind 69-58 victory over Morrisville State College on Wednesday at the Farenthold Athletic Wing. With the win, Wells moves to 4-3 overall on the year and to 1-0 within the North Eastern Athletic Conference. The visiting Mustangs drop to 3-3 on the season and to 0-1 against league opponents.

Playing in only 24 minutes due to early foul trouble, junior Ashida Cooper (Bensalem, Pa.) scored a team-leading 18 points and added four steals for Wells. Freshman Shelby Medovich (Harpursville, N.Y.) added 14 points while classmate Carley Ryan (Middleburgh, N.Y.) dropped 13 points in the game.

Senior Holli Erkson (Cooperstown, N.Y.) posted 10 points and six rebounds, chipping in with three takeaways. Senior Lindsay Achzet (Johnstown, N.Y.) led the way with eight rebounds for the Express.

Morrisville State took the early 2-0 lead, but Wells scored the game’s next 14 points to take a commanding 14-2 lead with 7:06 remaining in the first quarter. The Mustangs, however, stunned the Express by scoring 25 of the game’s next 32 points to build a 27-21 lead with 7:46 remaining in the first half of play.

The Mustangs would eventually build a game-high 11 point lead after opening the third quarter on a 6-0 run, leading 44-33. Cooper countered for the Express with two layups that sparked an extended run that saw Wells post 13 of the game’s next 15 points to tie the game at 46 with 45 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Tied at 48 after 30 minutes of action, Wells exploded for 21 points and ended the game on a 14-2 scoring run that put the Express ahead for good with a Cooper jumper with 6:05 left in the contest. Cooper was ultimately responsible for eight of her team’s points across that timespan.

Morrisville State was led by 14 points from Haley Kilmartin. Jordan Anderson scored 12 points and hauled in as many rebounds for the Mustangs while Allison Chasealso scored 12 points for Morrisville State off the bench.
