Dean All-Star Game MVP

Tack on another year of East superiority in the Ernie Davis Exceptional Senior Classic. And this time, with a major boost from the I-88 connection.

Harpursville’s Devon Dean and Unatego’s Tanner Winchester shared Offensive Player of the Game recognition as the East won by 28-7 Monday night at Union-Endicott’s Ty Cobb Stadium.

The outcome marked a fifth consecutive East win and its 18th in 25 editions of this annual showcase— which was rescheduled as result of last Wednesday’s inclement weather.

Quarterback Dean and receiver Winchester collaborated eight times for 194 yards through the air— that is, nearest the eye could decipher.

See, along the way in this series it was determined that sharing of jersey numbers would be a fine idea. For instance, Dean wore No. 6, as did Winchester, and Daniel Jeffrey of Binghamton. The West roster reflected seven players sporting No. 5, three wearing 52, a couple 11’s, couple 21’s.

Anyway …

East struck first in third-try fashion after two apparent TDs were scrubbed away by 5-yard penalties. On third-and-10 from the West’s 11-yard line, Winchester accepted a pitch in the backfield, set and fired to clear-and-free Bryan Morrison of Binghamton in the left side of the end zone 6:05 into play.

The East’s next scoring drive was set up when Vestal’s Geno Arthur knocked down a fourth-and-5 pass, giving his team possession at its 49-yard line.

Sam Crowley of Seton Catholic Central took a direct snap and rushed 27 yards on first down, and four plays later Dean delivered a jump ball to the right side of the end zone that Winchester won for a TD.

Lain Zembek of Susquehanna Valley added the PAT kick for a 14-0 East lead with 36 seconds to play in the opening quarter.

Dean-to-Winchester accounted for three connections and 102 yards in a scoreless second quarter, during which West possessions concluded with a lost fumble, inability to convert on fourth down from the East’s 6-yard line, and an intercepted pass.

In a scoreless third quarter, the West snapped the football one time in East territory, and that resulted in a sack for minus-3 yards by U-E’s Tahjae Napoleon.

One East drive in that quarter reached the West’s 19-yard line, but was halted when Dean was felled for a 12-yard loss.

The West team’s TD came on the sixth play of the final quarter.

On a fourth-and-23 play, Zembek offered at a 47-yard field goal attempt.

The football fell considerably short of the mark and was scooped up by Javonte Green of Elmira at his 6-yard line. Against a field goal unit clearly taken aback by an opponent returning the football its way, Green scooted along the guests’ sideline for a 94-yard TD 2:50 into the final quarter.

But the East responded on its next possession, going 69 yards on six plays, aided by West penalties for pass interference and a 5-yarder for incidental grab of the facemask.

The key play was the doing of Dean, whose clever footwork enabled him to elude big-time heat before delivering a pass to Winchester_ who lunged and stretched his arm that grasped the football but was ruled down at the 1.

No worries. Dean rushed in on the next play, Zembek kicked and it was 21-7 midway into the fourth.

The East completed scoring when, on second-and-18 from his 27-yard line, SV’s Marquis Jackson took a direct snap and started on an inside path, created some room, headed diagonally right into clearance along the home sideline and finished a 73-yard scoring rush.

The West’s final offensive play was squelched by Unatego’s Nate Wilsey, who made it a two-interception night with 53.5 seconds remaining. Wilsey and Elmira’s Green shared top defensive honors.
