Hornet’s Season Preview

Posted On: Monday, September 30, 2013

The Harpursville Hornets return 15 starters from last year’s division championship team.  The Hornets
lost their first game of the season to Spencer-Van Etten, proceeded to roll off seven consecutive wins, then lost 30-15 to Groton in the Class D semifinals.

Expectations are high for the Hornets who are coming off their first winning season in 27 years.  When asked about the seven wins, third-year coach Tim Petras said “I can’t definitively say that last year was a school record for wins in a season, but I went through all of the yearbooks in the library, and I couldn’t find a season with more than six wins.”

Harpursville’s defense allowed only 121 points last season, good for second-best in Class D, and at one point held opponents scoreless for 14 consecutive quarters.  The Hornets’ high-powered offense scored more than 40 points in a game in five of their nine contests a season ago.

The Hornets will be without runningback/safety Mason Dean, currently playing at Hartwick College, who gained 915 yards on the ground last year and scored 17 touchdowns.

Returning for the Hornets is junior quarterback Devon Dean,  who accounted for 680 yards and six scores on  the ground and 432 yards and five touchdowns through the air.  Devon Dean, a Division VIII all-star a year  ago is joined in the backfield by a pair of returning Division VIII all-stars.

Senior Steven Lee, 765 yards rushing and 11 scores, is returning at halfback, with fellow senior Andrew Kimmel, 704 yards rushing and eight touchdowns, lining up at fullback.

Jon Andrews (TE/DE) and Scott Gregory (OT/DT) are another pair of Division VIII all-stars returning for the Hornets.
