Applying for a top college is tough — and applying for one of the nation’s top-notch U.S. Service Academies is even tougher. Applicants don’t just need to make the grade academically, but they must also pass physical tests and be nominated by a member of Congress. Basketball standout Savannah Murray navigated all the hoops and will be attending the U.S. Military Academy in West Point starting this summer. In addition to playing on her school’s basketball team, the 17-year-old senior is in National Honor Society and the Interact Club. She has a twin brother and an older sister, and is the daughter of Irene and Kevin Murray.
Why West Point?
The challenges, the opportunities it would give me to improve myself, the self-development aspect of it, and the chance to serve my country.
How long is the application process?
I started in the summer. I had to apply for a nomination for a school; I got mine from Congressman (Richard) Hanna. I had to qualify academically and to pass a physical fitness test.
When did you find out you got in?
Feb. 26, I think. I wasn’t home, so my mom answered; Congressman Hanna called my house phone. My mom told me that night. I was so happy. It was such a long process.
Do you hope to play basketball at West Point?
At some level; I’m going to try out. It’s a goal.
I hear you’re valedictorian. How tough is the competition?
I’ve never asked. They told us at the end of 10th grade; the top three haven’t changed since then.
What’s your favorite class?
Languages. I took Spanish for five years and now I’m in French. I really like the language and culture aspects.
Is that what you plan to focus on at West Point?
I was intending to focus on language. It would be cool to be a linguist, a military translator. They have Arabic and Chinese; that would be cool. I love language, culture and travel.
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Portugal. I just love it. I met some people from Portugal and it was a great experience. The language is a mixture of Spanish and French; it sounds so cool.
So, when do you leave for West Point?
July 1, eight days after graduation.
What do you plan to do during those eight days?
Spend time with my family and friends.
Will it be tough to be away from your family?
It will be different. It will be hard for the first six weeks; you can’t have a cellphone. It will have to be letters and old-fashioned mail.
What do you do for fun?
I just hang out. I like hiking and I like playing basketball. I like being outside.
